For the second consecutive week, the Centre College men's basketball team dropped both games, losing today to Southwestern University 55-52, Sunday, Jan. 23, in Georgetown, Texas.
The Colonels, which lost to Trinity University Friday night, fall to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Southwestern improves to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Aaron Bowser led the Pirates with 16 points and Danny Franklin added 11 points off the bench in the win. Dan Slezak posted a team-high eight rebounds for Southwestern.
Sophomore forward Matt Jacobson notched a game-high 17 points with five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward Adam Patterson added 10 points and three rebounds off the bench in the loss.
Two days after recording his 500th career rebound, junior forward Coy Zerhusen pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Colonels.
Centre's shooting woes continued as they shot only 28.6% (6-21) in the first half. The Colonels only led once in the half when Jacobson drained a three-pointer at the 10:52 mark to give Centre a 7-6 lead.
Southwestern then went on a 17-5 run to regain the lead and go up 23-12 at the 2:57 mark. The Pirates would lead by as many as 14 points in the half taking a 31-17 lead into the intermission.
With the Pirates up 35-19 early in the second half, Centre went on a 13-0 run to pull within 35-32 at the 14:47 mark. Jacobson and Patterson conbined to score all 13 points, as Jacobson scored eight and Patterson added five.
Southwestern responded by going on a 12-1 run to push the lead to 14 points (47-33) midway through the half. The Colonels then used a 15-4 run to get within three again at 51-48 with only 1:38 remaining.
Centre would get no closer than three points and fall for the fourth straight game. Centre finished the game shooting only 34.6% (18-52) from the field. In their last eight halfs of basketball, the Colonels have shot 40% or better only twice. Centre has only shot 35.6% (73-205) from the floor in its last four games, all losses.
Southwestern finished the game shooting 40.8% on 20 of 49 shooting. In the second half of Centre's last four games opponents have combined to shoot 53.4% on 47 of 88 shooting.
The Colonels will return home, Friday, Jan. 28, when they host the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The SCAC contest is slated to tip-off at 8 p.m.
