Whitworth 75, Pacific 52

SPOKANE, Wash. — Improved defense and rebounding led Whitworth College to a 75-52 win over visiting Pacific University in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on Saturday night in the Whitworth Fieldhouse, ending the Pirates' longest losing streak in five seasons.

Lance Pecht scored 18 points off of the bench to lead Whitworth (6-8 overall, 2-4 NWC), which ended a four game losing streak, the team's longest since dropping five in a row during the 1999-2000 season. Jon Young added 17 points and Bryan Williams chipped in 10 points and seven assists. Mike Larkin led all players with 10 rebounds.

Brad Krichevsky led the Boxers (2-11, 1-4) with 15 points, the only Pacific player to reach double figures. Jordan Osborne, who did not play in the first half, scored nine points on three three pointers in the second half. Nate McBride led the Boxers in rebounds (4) and assists (3).

Whitworth held Pacific to 37.8% shooting from the field and outrebounded the Boxers 40-22.

Whitworth started the game with a new found defensive intensity, holding Pacific scoreless for the first five and a half minutes while taking a 14-0 lead. Young hit three three pointers and Williams scored the other five points in the streak.

After leading by 13 points at halftime (33-20), Whitworth extended the lead to 50-30 with 10:30 to play on another Young three pointer. The Boxers got back within 64-49 on a Krichevsky free throw with just over three minutes to play, but Whitworth ended the game on an 11-3 run.

Whitworth and Pacific will return to action on Tuesday night. The Pirates will host Whitman College, while the Boxers entertain George Fox University.
