Guard Jake Phillips had five of his 18 points to fuel a 12-0 overtime run as visiting Knights (9-7 overall, 7-4 MIAC) pulled away for an 87-77 win over the host Tommies (10-5, 10-1) in MIAC men's basketball play Saturday in St. Paul.
Senior Kyle Beste had 22 points, freshman Tommy Drake had 21 points and eight rebounds, senior Anthony Baquero had 12 pointsand junior Dan Forkrud had 11 points for Carleton, which had lost six games by six or less points.
Carleton avenged a 67-66 home loss to St. Thomas 12 days ago and moved alone into third place in the MIAC race.
The Tommies had a seven-game winning streak halted and lost at home for the first time in six games. They shot 54% in the first half and 46% in regulation but missed their first eight shots of overtime.
Senior Neal Anderson had 20 points, junior Joey Shimek had 19 points and 13 rebounds, sophomore Bryan Schnettler had 16 points, Sean Sweeney had 11 assists and Isaac Rosefelt had 11 rebounds.
UST led 39-35 at halftime. There were seven lead changes in the second half.
The Knights led 66-60 with 4:00 left but missed four shots and four free throws down the stretch. They fell behind 69-68 on Shimek’s 3-pointer with 52 seconds to play.
The Knights missed two free throws and a subsequent 3-point shot, but were awarded the ball after a scramble in the corner with 15 seconds left.
Drake was fouled out front and made two free throws with 10 seconds left for a 70-69 lead. UST’s Sweeney drove the court, missed a shot but got the rebound and was fouled on the putback. He made one to tie 70-70 with 2.3 seconds to go.
After a Carleton time out, Sweeney, an 85% free-throw shooter, missed the second try and the clock ran out to force overtime.
The Knights scored 12 unanswered points in the extra session. Beste's jumper with 4:04 to go put them ahead to stay at 74-72. Phillips' 3-point basket made it 80-72 with 2:27 left, and he added two free throws on the next possession for a 10-point lead.
