Randolph-Macon 77, Roanoke 65

SALEM, Va. — Junior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) led all scorers and rebounders with 17 points and eight rebounds to help the visiting Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team to a 77-65 victory over Roanoke College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday, January 22. Seven of Wansley’s rebounds were defensive. Also for the Yellow Jackets, senior guard Justin Moyer (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) and sophomore guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) each scored 14 points. Moyer also had a game-high six assists, and converted on 2-of-4 (50.0%) three-point attempts. Krovic shot 4-for-5 (80.0%) from the floor, including 2-of-3 (66.7%) three-pointers, and also made all four of his foul shot attempts.

The win improves Randolph-Macon to 9-7 overall and 7-3 in the ODAC. The Maroons drop to 9-7 on the season and 3-6 in the conference.

Roanoke only led early in the contest, at 3-0 on a three-pointer by senior forward Robbie Winfield (Athens, TN/McMinn County), assisted by junior guard Jared Butler (Springfield, VA/West Springfield). A layup by Randolph-Macon sophomore forward Philip Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy), off an assist by Moyer, made the score 3-2, and Hawley capped off the three-point play with a foul shot to tie things up at 3-3.

Wansley put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good with a layup assisted by junior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine School) a little more than four minutes into the game. In the first half, Randolph-Macon would lead by as many as 11 points several times. The halftime margin was only six points, however, 36-30.

Two three-pointers by Roanoke’s Butler, sandwiched around a layup by Randolph-Macon’s Gill, reduced the deficit to just two points, 38-36, early in the second half. But that was as close as the Maroons would get. In the final five minutes, the lead was never less than six points, and late in the contest the Yellow Jackets had their biggest lead of the game at 13 points twice.

Following the performances of Wansley, Moyer, and Krovic, Randolph-Macon’s Gill and freshman center Andrew Baker (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each scored eight points. Gill made 3-of-4 (75.0%) field goals, which included 2-of-3 (66.7%) three-point attempts. Hawley finished with seven points and six rebounds.

Roanoke was led by Butler, with 16 points, including 6-of-7 (85.7%) free throws, plus a game-high three steals. Sophomore center Ben Lawler (Abingdon, VA/Abingdon) totaled 10 points and five rebounds. Senior center Kevinn Hunter (Dale City, VA/Gar-Field) added eight points. Freshman guard Keith Carter (Roanoke, VA/Northside) contributed with seven points and a team-high five assists.
