Austin 91, LeTourneau 73

LONGVIEW, Tx. — Behind 30 points from freshman forward Denee McKay, the LeTourneau University women’s basketball team trailed American Southwest Conference East Division leading Austin College 70-69 with 5:23 remaining in regulation, but the Lady ‘Roos finished the game with a 21-4 run to get the 91-73 victory in the Solheim Arena on Saturday afternoon.
McKay concluded a brilliant week for the LadyJackets (2-14, 2-11) with an 11-of-15 performance from the field and a team high eight rebounds. Junior wing Brooke Stowers scored 13 points and was the only other LadyJacket to reach double figures.
For the second straight game, LeTourneau jumped out to an early lead. The LadyJackets led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Austin College battled back on the strength of five first half three-pointers from Stephanie Knudson. Her final three-pointer of the half gave AC a 38-36 halftime advantage.
Knudson opened the second half with her sixth three-pointer of the game, but it was LeTourneau that went on a 17-4 run over the next 4:30. The Lady ‘Roos did not regain the lead again until the 10:58 mark, but from that point on they trailed for just 17 seconds.
Knudson finished with a team high 25 points and seven three-pointers while Kristen Davis added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Libby Kellum and Velencia Johnson scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Ceren Unal had a solid all-around game with five points, five rebounds and four blocks. Austin College shot 48.3 percent from the floor and were able to ice the game at the foul line connecting on 25 of 30 attempts.
Junior point guard Marissa Coop had another good game for LeTourneau with nine assists and six points. Sophomore forward Tamra Tolen came off the bench to score eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Overall, LeTourneau shot 39.1 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line.
Coop is now just one assist away from tying the all-time LeTourneau University record of 313 set by Julie Lawrence (1997-01). The LadyJackets do not play again until Thursday night at UT-Tyler beginning at 5:30. The game can be heard online at www.tsrnsports.com.
