Austin 82, LeTourneau 76

LONGVIEW, Tx. — A huge rebounding advantage and great three-point shooting were the keys to Austin College’s 82-76 win over LeTourneau University in American Southwest Conference East Division play on Saturday afternoon in the Solheim Arena.
The YellowJackets (3-13, 2-11) shot the ball well; 50.9 percent from the floor, 47.8 percent from the three-point arc, but the ‘Roos (5-11, 4-9) shot it better; 56 percent from the floor and 55 percent from behind the arc. Austin College controlled the rebounding edge with 35 boards compared to just 18 from LeTourneau.
Freshman point guard Jonathan Collins and senior Julius McClaskey each had 20 points for the Jackets while junior Travis Bankett added 12 points. Collins made four three-pointers and finished the game 7-of-11 from the floor with three steals and three assists. McClaskey’s 8-for-13 performance was his best shooting game of the month. Freshman Jay Burnett came off the bench to score seven points and led the team with six rebounds. Fellow freshman Brandon Morris tallied eight points.
Anthony Holman and J.P. Johnson did the majority of the offensive damage for the ‘Roos. Holman finished with a game-high 24 points, scored the clinching basket of the game and made 4-of-7 three-point attempts. Johnson also nailed 4-of-7 three-pointers and finished the game with 16 points. Center Chris Caudle finished with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Brian Bambrick swished 3-of-5 three-pointers off the bench for AC.
“I thought we played pretty well,” said LETU head coach Bernie Balikian, “but you have to tip your hat to a team that shoots as well as they did.”
This was LeTourneau’s sixth loss of the season that came by 9 points or less. The Jackets do not play again until Thursday night at UT-Tyler at approximately 7:30. The game can be heard online at www.tsrnports.com.
