The Hornets overcame a 10-point first-half deficit and grabbed a 55-64 lead midway through the second half after Manos Jr.'s fifth three-pointer of the game capped a 10-0 Lynchburg run. The Quakers (10-7, 5-5 ODAC) answered with a 22-7 spurt and opened a 76-59 edge with 5:21 left after an Ashford Gray (Charlotte, NC/Garinger) three-pointer.
Gray's bucket marked Guilford's second-to-last field goal of the game as Lynchburg outscored Guilford, 16-9, in the final 5:21. Manos Jr. tallied seven of his 12 second-half points down the stretch, including the go-ahead free throws. He made nine-of-13 field goals, including five-of-seven three-pointers. Junior Andy Albright (Hudson, OH/Hudson) tallied 11 of his 16 points off the bench in the second half, including eight in the last three minutes. Senior Ryan Pehanick (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) chipped in 13 points and a game-high eight boards for Lynchburg. The Hornets had 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 23 points.
Foul-shooting plagued the Quakers, as the hosts missed 12 free throws, including three in the final 4:19. Freshman Kerry Atkinson (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) led Guilford with 21 points and five rebounds. Classmate Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) added 15 points, four boards and three blocks.
Guilford starts a three-game road trip Wednesday (1/26) at league-rival Hampden-Sydney.
