It was a back and forth game for the final 10 minutes of regulation and Babson took a 67-64 lead on a driving layup by Greg Bush with 21 seconds left and Johnson’s three-pointer sent the game to overtime.
In the overtime, Coast Guard led 76-72 on a basket by Jeff Prebeck with 2:06 left. CJ Enere cut the lead to 76-74 on a basket with 1:50 left.
Prebeck hit one of two free throws and Al Sowers sank two free throws as the Bears extended their lead to 79-74 with 37.7 seconds left.
Coast Guard led 81-77 when Phil Riffe hit a three-pointer with 17.3 seconds left to cut the lead to 81-80.
Prebeck made two free throws with 15.6 seconds left to make the score 83-80.
Babson (6-10, 1-3) had a missed two by Enere and a missed three-pointer by Elliman and then H.B. Baker sank one free throw and missed the second one intentionally with 0.4 seconds left as Coast Guard snapped its nine-game losing streak against Babson.
Babson jumped out to a 16-7 lead with 11:57 left in the first half before Coast Guard battled back to take a 30-29 halftime lead.
Coast Guard built a 37-31 lead with 17 minutes left before Babson used a 14-4 run sparked by four three-pointers by Riffe to take a 45-41 lead with 13:28 left.
Prebeck led six Bears in double figures with 18 points to go with a career-high 16 rebounds. Craig Johnson (15), Sowers (14), Grant Johnson (13), Dan Sheppard (10) and Kevin Edes (10) were also in double figures for Coast Guard (8-7, 1-4).
Riffe and Enere each led Babson with 20 points while Elliman added 14 points and Bush 11 points. Elliman had a team-high 12 rebounds.
