Ferrum 73, Christopher Newport 60

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Ferrum College rode the hot hand of Kenny Johnson right to the end leading the Panthers past Christopher Newport 73-60.

FC got off to a hot start and lead at halftime 41-27 on 15-of-28 (54%) shooting from the floor, 5-of-9 (56%) on three's and 6-of-9 (67%) from the free throw line. Johnson led all scorers at the break with 16 points.

The Panthers held the Captains to 9-of-24 (38%) shooting, 4-of-5 on three's and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

The Captains out scored Ferrum in the second half, by just one, 33-32. CNU was 10-of-26 (39%) from the field in the second stanza, 5-of-16 (31%) on three's and 8-of-11 (73%) from the free throw line. FC finished the second half 8-of-23 (35%) from the floor, 3-of-8 (37%) on three's and 13-of-19 (68%) from the charity stripe.

For the game, FC shot 23-of-51 (45%) from the field, 8-of-17 (47%) on three's and 19-of-28 (68%) from the charity stripe. CNU finished 19-of-50 (38%) from the floor, 9-of-21 (43%) on three's and 13-of-16 (81%) from the free throw line.

The Captains got as close as four, twice, with the final time coming with FC leading 63-59 with 2:07 left in the game. Jordan Short's three-pointer cut the lead to four before Rob Fuller came down on the very next possession and matched Short's three-pointer to increase the lead back to six. CNU committed 16 turnovers that lead to 17 Panther points. FC also snapped an 18-game losing streak to the Captains.

CNU was lead by Short with 13 points off the bench. The Panthers were lead by Johnson's 25 points and eight assists. Keith Harris finished with 13 points, Ken Holley added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Fuller finished with 12 as well.

FC improves to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the USA South. The Captains fall to 11-4 overall and 1-2 in the USA South.

CNU returns to action Wednesday as they host Averett with start time set for 7:30 pm.
