Shogren recorded game highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds to help the Pirates rebound from their first loss of the season and improve to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the NWC. Tiffany Speer added 16 points and Dani Bielec scored 13 for Whitworth. Starting point guard Wenchi Liu recorded 10 assists, one off of her career high.
Crystal Castle came off of the bench to score 17 points for the Pioneers, who fell to 5-8, 1-3. No other L&C player scored in double figures. Kayla Kennedy led the starting five with seven points. Talia Hristou was the Pioneers' leading rebounder with seven boards.
The Pirates broke open the first half with an 18-3 run to take a 27-12 lead with 5:41 to go. But L&C battled back to pull within 32-19 at halftime.
A basket by Sarah Moon pulled the Pioneers to within 44-32 with 8:19 to play in the game. But then Whitworth went on a 17-3 run, with Shogren scoring 10 of the points to put the game away.
Whitworth returns to action on Saturday when the Pirates host Pacific University. L&C continues on the road at Whitman College. Both games begin at 6:00 pm.
