Lawrence 112, Grinnell 85

GRINNELL, Iowa — Jason Holinbeck poured in a school-record 47 points to lead the No. 17 Lawrence University men's basketball team to a 112-85 Midwest Conference victory at Grinnell College on Friday night.

Holinbeck broke the record of 45 points, which was held by three players, including current Vikings standout Chris Braier. Braier scored 45 at Grinnell on Jan. 25, 2003. Dick Schultz accomplished the same feat vs. Grinnell in 1967 and Pete Hachmeister had 45 vs. Silver Lake in 1975.

Holinbeck hit on 21 of 25 shots from the floor and was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.

Braier added 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for Lawrence (10-3, 5-2 MWC). Brett Sjoberg scored a career-high 13 points and Brendan Falls chipped in with 12 points.

The Vikings spoiled the debut of the new Darby Gymnasium. This was Grinnell's first home game of the season. Lawrence, which led 53-34 at the half, shot 48 of 65 (73.8 percent) from the floor.

Lance Tittle led Grinnell (4-10, 1-6) with 13 points. Eric Walsh and Matt Brown had 12 points apiece and Mike Schmidt had 10.

Grinnell shot only 33.7 percent (29-86) from the floor and connected on only 19 percent (12-63) of its 3-pointers.
