Western Connecticut 83, Newbury 66

DANBURY, CT — Western Connecticut’s men’s basketball team used a 17-4 run down the stretch to pull away from a pesky Newbury College team for an 83-66 victory at the Feldman Arena Thursday night.
The Colonials, 12-2 and winners of four straight and eight of their last nine games, found themselves tied four times in the first half before jetting to a 10-point advantage, 44-34 at the break.
Senior forward Brice Assie (Bridgeport, CT), who was named Little East Conference Player of the Week earlier in the day, had game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Colonials.
Jay Reginatto (Torrington, CT) added 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the floor for WestConn.
Senior guard Greg Cole (Terrytown, NY) sparked the Colonials in the second half and finished with 15 points and nine boards.
Newbury, 2-11, cut a 16-point second half deficit to seven points, 64-57 with 7:42 remaining in the game on a lay up by Kyle O’Connor (Georgetown, MA).
Kimani Crawford (West Hartford, CT) capped off WestConn’s 17-4 run with a lay in to give it an 81-61 lead. He finished with 10 points.
Walky Maglorie (Waltham, MA), who scored 19 first half points, finished with 23 points to lead the Nighthawks. Arch Mitchell (Sudbury, MA) added 16 points for Newbury.
Jeff Courneen (Rocky Hill, CT) added a career-high 11 points for WestConn.
