Salve Regina 61, Roger Williams 44

NEWPORT, R.I. — Four Seahawk starters scored in double-figures as Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated visiting Roger Williams University, 61-44, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at the Rodgers Recreation Center. It was the first league loss for the Hawks.

Roger Williams jumped out to a 5-0 lead following a Dan Gumb [FR/Patterson, N.Y.] lay-up and free throw. A Jon Hazzard [SO/North Kingstown, R.I.] steal and dunk tied the score for Salve Regina at 7-all. Gumb followed with a jumper in the paint before Hazzard re-tied the game with a tip-in.

Salve Regina took its first lead (15-14) on an Andrew Rego [FR/Little Compton, R.I.] three-pointer with 9:24 to go in the first half, and stayed ahead the rest of the game. The Seahawks closed the first half with an 11-4 run.

After Chris Collier [SR/Exeter, N.H.] scored the first points of the second half for Salve Regina, Roger Williams went on a 14-4 run and cut the deficit to one (36-35) on a jumper by Brian Scharrenweber [SR/Salisbury, Mass.]. Matt Coute [JR/Somerset, Mass.] started a 16-3 run for the Seahawks with a three-pointer at the 12:03 mark in the second and Salve Regina maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Coute finished with a game-high 14 points while Hazzard added 12 and Matt Grendal [SO/Foxboro, Mass.] scored 10 for the Seahawks. Collier had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards; he also had four assists, one shy of his career-high.

Gumb and Geoff Baranger [FR/Fairfield, Conn.] each scored eight points for Roger Williams (6-7; 5-1 CCC) who hosts Gordon College on Saturday. Salve Regina (9-5; 6-1 CCC) moves into first place in the league's South Division before playing at Colby-Sawyer on Saturday.
