Following Badiali’s trifecta, UMass Boston missed two shots, but the second rebound went out of bounds off of Bridgewater State with 1.2 seconds left in the contest. The Beacons inbound pass went to junior swingman Eric T. Bateman for an uncontested lay-up, but his shot would not go down as the Bears hung on for the win.
Bridgewater State owned a 35-30 lead at the intermission and Badiali canned a trifecta 15 seconds into the second session to give the Bears an eight-point advantage at 38-30. BSC maintained a 46-38 advantage with 14:42 showing on the second half clock, before UMass Boston came alive with 11 unanswered points to a take a 49-46 margin behind a pair of treys from Barros, with 11:20 remaining in the contest. Bridgewater came back to take a 54-52 edge with 9:26 to go, but the Beacons seemed to take control with a 13-1 run, paced by six points from senior guard Nathan Proulx, to take a commanding 65-55 advantage with 7:36 to play in the game. The Beacons later held a 78-73 lead with 29 seconds to go, but Badiali nailed a three-bomb with 20 seconds left to pull BSC to within 78-76. On the following possession, the Bears pressed UMB into a turnover to set up Badiali’s difference-making trifecta.
Badiali poured in a game-high 25 points and was 6-13 from three-point range in addition to pulling down five rebounds, making a pair of steals, dishing for two assists and blocking a shot. Peter Santos posted a double-double of 21 points and 13 caroms to go with two steals and two assists, while Brian Adamczyk led all playmakers with 10 assists in addition to nine points, two rebounds and two steals.
Barros finished the night for UMass Boston with 22 points on 7-11 from the floor, including 6-9 from three-point territory, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal in 25 minutes off the bench, while freshman forward Alberto Paniagua dropped in 17 points and added seven rebounds, six steals, three assists and a blocked shot. Bateman also contributed with 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The Beacons will be in action again when they host Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, January 22 at 3:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston.
