The YellowJackets (3-12, 2-10) took an 86-81 lead with 56 remaining in regulation when freshman Jay Burnett hit his fourth three-pointer of the game to give him a career-high 20 points. The Eagles (9-6, 7-5) pushed the ball up the floor and Jake Sibley drew a foul and knocked down both free throws with 50 seconds left to cut the lead to three. Two turnovers later and the Eagles suddenly had a one-point lead.
Collins brought the ball down the court for the Jackets and drew a foul with eight seconds remaining and he went to the line to shoot the 1-and-1. He missed the free throw and LETU was forced to foul. David Hamilton made 1-of-2 foul shots and it set the stage for Collins’ best Tyus Edney impersonation.
In overtime, Ozarks took a five-point lead with 23 seconds remaining, but a quick lay-up from senior Julius McClaskey cut the lead to three. LeTourneau fouled and the Eagles made 1-of-2 and then McClaskey hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to just one with seven seconds left. Sibley was fouled with five seconds left and connected on both free throws. A Joseph Richards three-pointer at the buzzer fell short and Ozarks came away with another American Southwest Conference East Division victory.
Burnett led the Jackets with 20 points while McClaskey tallied 18 and Collins finished with 13 points and four steals. Freshman post Tim Butler fouled out in regulation, but not before he tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Travis Bankett led LETU with nine rebounds and added seven points. The Jackets shot 47.4 percent from the floor, but only 64.7 percent from the foul line.
Brent Johnson led all scorers with 25 points, six three-pointers and four steals for the Eagles. Sibley came off the bench to score 19 points and made 9-of-11 free throws. David Hamilton and Josh Joyner each tallied a double-double. Hamilton finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Joyner added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Habeeb Kareem was the final Eagle player to score in double figures with 11 points. The Eagles shot 40.5 percent from the floor, but out scored LeTourneau 26-11 at the charity stripe.
The Jackets conclude their home stand on Saturday with an ASC game against Austin College at 3 o’clock. The game can be heard online at www.tsrnsports.com.
