St. Mary's (Md.) 74, Gallaudet 60

WASHINGTON, DC — Despite game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Robert Haney Jr., the Gallaudet University men’s basketball squad fell to visiting CAC foe St. Mary’s College (MD), 74-60, on Thursday night at the Fieldhouse. The Bison put together a late second half surge, cutting the Seahawks lead to two points. However, a questionable call and a 6-0 run propelled the visitors to the win.

St. Mary’s led from the opening tip when rookie guard Ryan Junghans nailed a trifecta from the baseline. The advantage grew to 12 when senior forward John Dewey knocked down a midrange jumper with 2:24 remaining in the first stanza. The visitors held a 39-32 lead at the break after shooting 53.3% (16-for-30) from the field compared to Gallaudet’s 33.3% (10-for-30).

The Bison awoke from their slumber midway through the second half and strung together a 13-5 run, closing the gap to 54-52 with 5:07 remaining. Rookie guard Sekoe White notched two of his career-high four steals during the barrage. The Seahawks countered with of a run of their own and Haney – who appeared to be pumping his fist in the air after a nifty defensive play – was charged with a questionable technical foul. St. Mary’s went onto earn the victory when Junghans rounded the scoring out with pair from the charity stripe.

White finished with 15 points and seven boards, while Dewey paced the Seahawks with 22 points and nine off the glass. Junghans and sophomore guard Dan Engelstad added 18 and 13 points, respectively, for the visitors. With the loss, Gallaudet drops to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play, while St. Mary’s improves to 6-9 and 2-3.

The Bison return to action for yet another CAC matchup when they travel to Catholic University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
