St. Davids, PA (January 20, 2005) - Eastern University men's basketball (5-10, 3-3 PAC) dropped their third conference game of the year to the defending PAC champs, Gwynedd-Mercy College, 84-58, Thursday night on the campus of Eastern University.
After starting the very first possession of the game with a turn-around dunk by GMC's senior Badou Gaye, the Eagles hung tough in the first 10 minutes of play keeping the game to within nine. The Eagles hit their first three, 3-pointers of the game to go up 9-8, but an ensuing 3-pointer by the Griffins' Chris DelBrocco gave the visitors the lead to stay. Eastern's senior forward, Brent Voorhees (Grandville, MI/Tri-Unity Christian) opened the game with two threes and finished the first half with nine points and an a steal. After 56% shooting form the floor, the Griffins held the first half lead, 41-24.
In the second half, the Eagles came out with great energy and cut the 17-point deficit to 12, but again a Griffin 3-pointer by Chris DelBrocco sparked a GMC run to as many as 26, which proved to be the final score. Brent Voorhees added six points in the second half to finish with a team-high 15, while adding three rebounds and two steals. Sophomore, Lenny Dimaria (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) posted his second game in a row with double-digit scoring with eleven tonight including three, 3-pointers on eight attempts. New-comer, Shawn Collier made the best of his six minute debut depositing seven points and grabbing two boards. Chris McMonagle (lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic), Dan Piotrowski (Hartford, CT/East Catholic) and Matt Flanagan (Dallas, PA/Bishop O'Reily) all scored six points on the night with Chris adding three rebounds and three assists, Dan three boards and two steals and Matt added one rebound.
The Eagles will face College Misericordia on Saturday for the second time this season. The Eagles defeated the Cougars, 51-48 back in early December and look to add another conference win to their record. They will play the second game of an afternoon double-header starting at 3pm. The Eastern women will face the Cougars at 1pm.
