Allegheny 88, Oberlin 73

OBERLIN, Ohio — Junior forward Matt Majzlik and sophomore guard Casey McCloskey both scored 26 points to lead the Allegheny College men’s basketball team (6-9, 3-4) to an 88-73 victory at Oberlin (Ohio) College (1-15, 0-7) Wednesday night.

The hosts opened the game with a 4-3 lead but Allegheny scored seven consecutive points, five coming from Majzlik, to take a 10-4 advantage. The Gator lead was double digits for most of the first half until the Yeomen closed on a strong note. An 11-2 Oberlin run over the half’s final 4:17 trimmed the Gator lead to 37-34 at intermission. Majzlik hit for 13 by the break, while Dewayne Evans tallied 12, including five during Oberlin’s final burst before half.

In the second half, Allegheny’s strength inside bettered the Yeomen’s outside shooting to allow the Gators to pull away. The AC lead was just 49-47 when Majzlik hit a pair of free throws and freshman guard Justin Schmitt buried a triple to give the Gators some breathing room. With Allegheny holding a 63-54 lead with 8:57 remaining, the Gators put the game away with a 10-0 spurt and Oberlin didn’t really threaten again.

Allegheny tallied 32 points in the paint in the final 20 minutes and 46 for the game, which helped balance out the hot-shooting from Oberlin, who hit seven three-pointers in the second half and went 10-21 from the arc for the game.

Majzlik continued his recent hot streak, as he went 9-12 from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the foul line in reaching 26 markers. He also grabbed a season-high nine rebounds, as Allegheny held a 36-22 advantage on the glass.

McCloskey’s 26 came on 9-16 shooting from the floor and an 8-10 effort from the charity stripe. Freshman guard Bill Babe recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and Schmitt put together a very solid all-around effort with 10 points, six steals, five rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

Oberlin’s Matthew Godwin fired in 23 points off 5-10 shooting from the arc, while Evans finished with 21 points and eight assists. The Gators limited the NCAC’s leading scorer Quinton Spencer to only 14 markers on 6-14 shooting, seven below his season average.

Allegheny returns to the hardwood Saturday with a home game against Denison University at 3 p.m.
