Wheaton (Ill.) 99, North Park 80

Chicago, Ill — The Wheaton Thunder men’s basketball team (11-3/1-2 CCIW) played well in earning its first CCIW win of the season in a 99-80 victory at North Park (4-10/0-3 CCIW) on Wednesday night. Wheaton, ranked 16th in this week’s D3Hoops.com Top 25, will host Elmhurst on Saturday night at 7:30 PM in King Arena. Elmhurst (10-5/2-2) will come to Wheaton off of a 72-51 win at home tonight over #21-ranked North Central (13-3/3-2).

North Park jumped out to a 7-4 lead tonight. Thunder senior Martin Trimiew made a layup with 17:35 left to play in the first half to start a 23-4 Wheaton scoring run that lasted 7:30 and gave the guests a commanding 27-11 lead with 10:35 left in the opening half. Wheaton’s biggest lead of the first half was its 20-point advantage at halftime, as the ‘Orange and Blue’ held a 54-34 lead. The guests remained in control throughout the second half, with Wheaton’s biggest lead of the game coming with a 28-point advantage with a 70-42 lead with 14:05 left in the game.

Senior guard Jon Nielson led the Thunder with 23 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field, with a 3-for-4 effort from three-point range and he was 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Nielson added five assists and four rebounds. Trimiew scored 15 points with a 5-for-7 effort in the field, six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Kent Raymond scored 14 points, with three steals and fellow senior Jonathan Steven scored 11 points. Steven shot 4-for-7 from the field, with 3-for-5 from three-point range and five rebounds. Seniors Jim Fortosis and Andrew Lettinga, along with sophomore Luke Bennett each scored six points.

Je’shawn Stevenson scored a team-high 16 points, with four assists to lead the Vikings. Cory Wilks scored 15 points and Brett Mathisen added 14 points with four rebounds. Lamar Townsend scored 10 points for the hosts.

Wheaton shot 63.6% (35-55) from the field, with 52.9% (9-17) from three-point range and 87% (20-23) from the free throw line. North Park shot 43.9% (29-66) from the field, with 35.3% (6-17) from three-point range and 84.2% (16-19) from the free throw line. Wheaton out-rebounded the Vikings 33-27, but North Park held a 13-8 edge on the offensive glass.
