JERSEY CITY, NJ — NEW JERSEY CITY HITS 15 3-POINTERS, WINS BY 50, WITH 108-58 ROUT OF SUNY-PURCHASE

New Jersey City University set a single-game school record with 15 three-pointers, out-rebounded its opponent, 63-26, including 28-4 on the offensive glass, and improved to 75-0 all-time when scoring 100 or more points in a game, as the Gothic Knights blasted SUNY-Purchase, 108-58, at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center. NJCU’s bench outscored Purchase’s reserves, 72-15.

The 50-point margin of victory for NJCU (10-6) marks the seventh time it has scored 50-plus in a game in school history, and the first time in more than 15 years. NJCU’s last 50-point victory was a 57-point blowout (105-48) against Lehman College on December 19, 1989. It also marked the 37th time NJCU has ever won by 30 or more points, the benchmark for a true lopsided victory.

NJCU’s 37-rebound edge also was the largest margin in school history since the record began being tracked.

It was the first-ever meeting between NJCU and SUNY-Purchase (5-9). The Panthers have lost their last six since opening the season at 5-3.

Four players reached double figures for NJCU in a game where all 15 available players scored and logged between 10 and 16 minutes of action.

In only 14 minutes, junior swingman MARK WASHINGTON (East Orange, NJ/West Side), had a game-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. He added three assists. Junior swingman SANNI OJIBARA (Irvington, NJ/Irvington), playing in his first game for the Knights since transferring from Division II Felician College, added 13 points (4-of-9 FG, 2-of-3 3 FG) and eight rebounds (five offensive).

Freshman point guard CHARLES COLES (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) canned his first four three pointers, before finishing with 12 points and four assists in 14 minutes. He hit 4-of-5 from the field, all from beyond the arc. Freshman forward ANTOINNE MORGANO (Newark, NJ/University) had 10 points (4-5 FG).

Also for NJCU, sophomore center ABRAHAM WILLIAMS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) had a game-high nine rebounds, with six points and two blocks in 16 minutes. Sophomore center DEVIN DAVIS (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) added nine points (3-6) and five rebounds in 16 minutes, and senior forward CHRISTOPHER KATES (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) tallied eight.

Junior guard JAMAL IEN (Brooklyn, NY/Nazareth) led the Panthers with 13 points (3-7) and five assists. Junior guard JAISON CORREA-SPAIN (New York, NY/The Masters School) collected 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard CHAD CHARNEY (Rye Brook, NY/Port Chester) had 11 (4-10 FG, 3-10 3 FG), while senior forward AKANTUNDE HENDERSON-AMARE (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Benneker) chipped in 10 points (5-13) and six rebounds. The rest of the team chalked up only 12 points.

NJCU never trailed, and opened up a 15-4 lead in the first 4:20 of action, before leading by 26 at the break, 50-24. NJCU had a 33-14 rebounding margin in the first period. NJCU’s scoring advantage was 24 in the second half, as the Knights outpaced Purchase, 58-34, and out-rebounded the visitor, 30-14.

NJCU, which shot 15-of-31 from three-point land for a solid .484 rate, made 38-of-85 overall (.447). NJCU was 17-of-23 at the line (.739). NJCU held margins of 38-10 in the paint, 15-0 on fast breaks, and 23-5 on second chance opportunities created by its 28 offensive caroms. Purchase committed 27 turnovers, which NJCU translated into a 33-11 difference in points off giveaways. The Panthers shot 21-of-58 overall in defeat (.362).

NJCU returns to action on Saturday, January 22 at 7pm when the Knights host #22-ranked Ramapo College on what will be Homecoming/Green and Gold Days 2005 in Jersey City.
