Carthage 86, Millikin 75

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (10-6, 4-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated CCIW-opponent Millikin University (8-6, 0-3 CCIW), 86-75 in overtime, on Wednesday, January 19 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage jumped out to a 15-point lead in the first period, 22-7, at 13:26. The Big Blue pulled to within eight points, 33-25, at 6:14 and trailed by 10 at the break, 42-32. Millikin used a 16-6 run at the start of the second half to take its first lead of the game, 49-48, at 12:04. The Redmen went back up by six, 67-61, at 4:09. Trailing by four, 70-66, Millikin’s Quintin Howard scored on a layup with four seconds remaining in regulation to make it a 70-68 game. Carthage’s Mark Morrison made the front end of two-shot foul, still with four seconds on the clock, to put the Redmen up by three, 71-68, but the Big Blue’s Jason Fisher drained a 35-footer at the buzzer to tie the contest at 71-71 after regulation. In overtime, it was all Carthage, as the Redmen went up by 13, 84-71, with 38 seconds left and went on to win by 11, 86-75. Carthage shot 48 percent (27-56), including 54 percent (15-28) in the first half. The Big Blue shot 42 percent (30-71). Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Pat Kalamatas had a career-high 25 points on seven-of-10 field goals and 10-of-15 from the free-throw line, along with eight rebounds. Mark Morrison had 19 points on six-of-nine from the floor, including five-of-eight from three-point range. Kevin Menard had 17 points and five rebounds, and Brian Schlemm chipped in 12 points and eight boards. Jason Fisher topped the Big Blue with 23 points. Chuck Williams had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Quintin Howard added 16 points and seven rebounds. Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, January 22 (7:30 p.m.) to take on conference-opponent Augustana College (Ill.) at the Carver Physical Education Center.
