Buena Vista led 67-65 after Coe's Brad Axdahl nailed a three point shot with 1:21 remaining in the game. The Kohawk bench then received a technical while arguing that the Beavers took to long to retrieve the ball in order to inbound it. Buena Vista, which shot a woeful 11 of 26 (42 percent) from the charity stripe, sent Michael Cameron to the line. Cameron, who was shooting 89 percent from the line entering the night, promptly missed both shots. After an Eric Wiebers missed shot, Coe came down and held for the last shot. Brian Brungard launched a three-point shot from the right wing as time expired. Brungard's attempt failed to draw iron, but Cameron was whistled for a foul. The officials put 0.8 seconds back on the clock. Brungard calmly hit all three free throws to put Coe ahead 68-67.
After a Buena Vista timeout, the Beavers had the length of the floor to travel and only 0.8 seconds to work with. As BVU was trying to inbound the ball, Kies set a screen on Coe's Rob Hanna who was face-guarding the ball. Hanna was called for a foul, which sent Kies to the line for two shots, and ultimately, the win.
"We always ran the play while I was in college," remarked Buena Vista Head Coach Brian Van Haaften after the game. "Usually the official doesn't call the foul. But in this situation he (Hanna) really ran him (Kies) over. The main priority of that play is to open up a passing lane down the floor."
Both team's made remarkable runs during the course of the evening. Coe broke a 32-32 halftime tie by going on a 16-6 scoring spurt to open the second half. Buena Vista answered with a 14-4 run to tie the game 52-52. Coe then seized a 60-53 advantage. The Beavers followed with a 13-0 run to take a 66-60 lead.
Wiebers led all scorers with 17 points, all of which came in the second half. Jordan Campbell and Randy Bissen added 13 and 12 points respectively. It was the 12th time in the last 13 meetings between the two schools that Buena Vista emerged victorious.
Coe was paced offensively by Brian Brungard and Nick Wilkins who netted 11 and 10 points. The Kohawks, the fifth best free throw shooting team in NCAA III, made 16 of 18 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line.
Buena Vista next travels to Central College on Saturday. Coe will host Simpson College the same day.
