Mount Holyoke 58, MIT 40

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Mount Holyoke posted its fourth win in a row, defeating the MIT Engineers 58-40, and improving the Lyons' record to 8-3, 3-1 in the NEWMAC. In the first five minutes of the game, the Lyons jumped out to an 8-0 lead with two baskets apiece from Angela Astuccio (Foxboro, MA) and Joeanna Silvey (Boston, MA). Mount Holyoke led by as much as 15 points in the first half. In the second stanza, MIT brought the score within eight points, but the Lyons hit eight free throws in a row to widen the gap and clinch the victory.

Three Mount Holyoke players scored in double-digits: Astuccio had a game-high 15 points, sinking 7-of-8 from the charity stripe; Silvey chipped in 14, including 4-of-5 free-throw attempts; and, Joneé Billy (New York, NY) contributed 10 points to the win. Silvey led the team in rebounds, notching nine for the night. As a whole, the Lyons shot 38.5% from field goal range, and finished on 18-of-21 (85.7%) from the free-throw line.

For the Engineers, Karen Kinnaman (Woodstock, NY) chipped in a team-high 13 points. Kinnaman also topped the rebound column with nine caroms. Defensively, Kimberly Eri Soo Hoo (Benicia, CA) picked up four steals for Tech. As a team, the Engineers finished 29.8% (14-47) of their shots and managed 60.0% (9-15) from the free-throw line.
