The Pipers (5-9, 3-6 in the MIAC) controlled the first 20 minutes of action, holding the Royals (10-4, 5-4) to just 28 percent shooting (8-29) in the half. Hamline held the Royals' top two scorers, Travis Jones and Tim Gilbert, to 0 of 8 shooting from the field and a combined four points.
Junior guard Jesse Hendricks tallied 10 of 16 points in the first half for the Pipers, who shot 42 percent (15-36) in the first half.
Hamline held a 57-49 lead as late as 10:21 left in the game on a Brandon Aukes basket, but the Royals ensued on a 22-5 run. Isaac Hinrichs and Gilbert each totaled six points in the spurt that lasted 6:00.
Gilbert 15 points in the second half, including a big three to give Bethel a 61-59 lead with 7:23 left - their first lead of the second half. Hendricks answered with his own three to give the lead back to Hamline, but Jones returned the favor with another three seconds later.
Piper forward Greg Koba added 16 points on 7 of 12 shooting. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Charley Good chipped in 15 points. Aukes tallied 11 points, and point guard Sam Wiener scored seven points and dished out 10 assists - his fifth game of the season with eight or more assists.
Bethel had four players in double figures. After Gilbert's game-high 17 points, Hinrichs added 16 points. Trent Perry and Matt Frederickson each totaled 13 points for the Royals, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
