Maryville (Mo.) 93, Westminster (Mo.) 89

FULTON, Mo. — The Maryville University men's basketball team took over sole possession of first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) with a 93-89 win over Westminster College (MO) on Saturday. The Saints improved to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Bluejays dropped to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the SLIAC.
Maryville hit 17-of-32 (.531) from the field in the first half to take a six point lead going into halftime, but Westminster would not go down without a fight. Both teams shot well the entire game, and in the end it came down to three-point shots made throughout the game. The Saints hit five more treys than the Bluejays to finish 14-of-33 (.424) for the game.
Sophomore Mat Capps hit 5-of-8 (.625) from behind the arc to finish with 15 points for the Saints. Junior Ryan Klein led Maryville's offensive attack with a team-high 22 points on 9-of-11 (.818) shooting from the field, 2-of-3 (.667) from three-point range and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe. Junior Matt Regan also scored in double figures for the Saints; he finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and six assists.
Westminster's David McDorman netted a game-high 23 points and also pulled down seven rebounds in his team's effort. Andrew Buxton and Landon Kurz added 15 points each, while Matt Leach scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.
The Saints will look to remain undefeated in conference action when they host Blackburn College (IL) on Wednesday in a 6:00 pm game at Moloney Arena.
