The Yellow Jackets (7-8, 1-0 PAC) fought back from an early deficit to take a 28-24 halftime lead and Waynesburg pushed it to 10 points (40-30) after a jumper by Coleman at the 14:57 mark of the second half.
The Presidents (3-12, 0-1 PAC) roared back to take a 59-52 lead with 2:50 remaining after a lay-up by freshman forward Adam Morrison (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Morrison canned a pair of free throws a minute later for a 61-52 lead, but Marc Lodovico, Beau Wilson and Jeff Nero all canned three-pointers in the next 40 seconds to tie the game. Lodovico had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but his shot rimmed out.
Waynesburg held a 72-69 lead with 12 seconds left in the first overtime, but W&J sophomore forward Patrick Stewart (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) knocked down a trey with seven seconds left to force a second overtime.
The second overtime featured four ties in the first four minutes, but sophomore guard Jon Koch’s (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) lay-up with 45 seconds on the clock made it an 84-82 W&J lead. Coleman’s offensive rebound and putback 12 seconds later tied the game, however. W&J had a chance to win the game, but sophomore point guard Anthony Hairston (Roanoke, Va./Roanoke Catholic) misfired on a late three-pointer.
The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the final overtime and made all six of its free throws in the final 40 seconds to earn the win.
Lodovico had a game-high 24 points to lead Waynesburg, which shot 41 percent (30-of-73).
Koch paced the Presidents with 23 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Hairston added 19 points and six assists, while sophomore guard Brandon Studer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) scored all 17 points in the overtime sessions.
W&J shot 46 percent (36-of-79) and held a 51-39 rebounding advantage, but could not overcome 25 turnovers.
