Wartburg 68, Coe 67

WAVERLY, IA — Junior guard Jason Steege drove the length of the floor, hit a lay-up, was fouled and canned the ensuing free throw with four seconds remaining to lead the Knights (12-3 overall, 6-0 Iowa Conference) to a come-from-behind, 68-67 win over Coe Saturday, Jan. 15, in Knights Gymnasium. Steege’s conventional three-point play continued the best IIAC start for Wartburg since 2000-01.

Head coach Dick Peth’s team rallied from deficits in the early portions of each half against the Kohawks (6-7 overall, 2-2 IIAC). Coe led 7-1 to begin the first frame before the home side gained a 36-31 halftime advantage. The visitors turned the momentum their way again early in the second stanza with a 15-2 run for a 46-38 lead with 15:30 to play. Wartburg whittled away at the lead and finally overtook Coe on Steege’s heroics.

Junior center Nate Schmidt, closing a 61-point week, turned in a single-game career-high 24 points to lead the way. He was also tops in rebounding (seven) and blocked shots (three). Steege added 12 points and four assists.
