Tufts 82, Bowdoin 65

MEDFORD, Ma. — Host Tufts University scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed on its way to posting an 82-65 victory over Bowdoin College in NESCAC men’s basketball play on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.

The Jumbos matched their victory total from last season with the win, improving to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the league. Senior tri-captain Reggie Stovell (Washington, DC) led the way with 19 points while junior Dan Martin (Sandwich, MA) recorded a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks. Junior forward Kyle Petrie (Iowa City, IA) scored 20 points with three steals to lead Bowdoin (7-6, 0-2), which suffered through a poor shooting day.

Tufts took control of the game quickly. After their fast start, they had the margin up to 12, 20-9, on a three-pointer by freshman Ryan O’Keefe (Everett, MA) eight minutes into the game. The Jumbos led by double digits for the remainder of the half and took a 34-21 advantage into the locker room. Martin and O’Keefe each had nine points at the break for Tufts. Bowdoin, which shot just 9 for 41 (22%) in the half, was led by seven points from freshman Andrew Hippert (Spencer, MA). Tufts dominated the glass, earning a 35-20 count in rebounds for the first 20 minutes.

Bowdoin shot the ball better in the second half, but Tufts remained consistent. The Polar Bears pulled within 13, 52-39, on a three ball by junior Nick Ordway (South Portland, ME) at the 11:37 mark, but they would not score for the next four minutes. The Tufts lead reached 20, 59-39, on a three-pointer by Stovell with 10:23 on the clock. That was part of a 16-0 run that locked the game away for the Jumbos. Stovell scored the first 13 points of the stretch, including a four-point play that put Tufts up by 26 (65-39) with 8:47 remaining. The margin touched 30 points, 71-41, on a three by senior tri-captain Drew Kaklamanos (Jupiter, FL) at 6:21 as the Jumbos rolled over the Polar Bears.

Tufts, which finished 8-17 a year ago, won the battle of the boards 58-39. Freshman Jake Weitzen (New York, NY) collected 10 rebounds to go with six points. Kaklamanos finished with 14 points, hitting 5 of 8 shots, and three assists for Tufts. Sophomore Jason Grauer (New York, NY) had a fine stint off the bench with nine points and five rebounds in 15 minutes.

Bowdoin tallied a 32.1 field goal percentage (26/81) for the game. Hippert added 17 points to the cause, while freshman Andrew Sargeantson (New Canaan, CT) posted 11 points and seven rebounds. The Polar Bears were playing without second leading scorer Kevin Bradley (Seekonk, MA).
