Texas Lutheran 89, Concordia-Austin 75

SEGUIN, Texas — Texas Lutheran senior post Tommy Stolhandske notched career highs in points (38) and in rebounds (23) to lead the Bulldogs to an 89-75 conference win over Concordia-Austin, Saturday afternoon in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Stolhandske dominated the small frontcourt of the Tornados. He made 14-of-17 field goal attempts and hit 10 of his 14 free throw attempts.

Stolhandske fell one rebound shy of tying the ASC single-game record for rebounds, 24, shared by McMurry’s Travis Tennison and Texas Lutheran’s John Laramore. The TLU single-game rebounding mark is 29, set by Bill Newton during the 1969-70 season.

Stolhandske’s 38 points are the most scored by an ASC player in a game this season.

Texas Lutheran improved to 10-4 overall and to 9-2 in the American Southwest Conference West Division.

Concordia-Austin fell to 3-10 overall and to 3-7 in the ASC West.

Nik Summers added 19 points for TLU on 7-of-9 shooting.

Texas Lutheran made 68.8 percent of all its field goal attempts and shot 72.7 percent in the second half. Yet Concordia-Austin rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half to close within five points with 5:52 to play. George Freeman scored 11 points in the Tornados’ 24-11 run. Freeman finished with a team-high 22 points and six assists.

Concordia’s Mike Moore hit a three to cut into the Texas Lutheran lead, at 71-66. Moore scored 13. Valentino Maxwell and Brandon Graves added 19 and 12 points, respectively.

TLU point guard Jason Morales hit a three-pointer on TLU’s next possession to push the lead back to eight. Will Hudson added two offensive rebounds and two put-backs to get the TLU lead back to 12 points with 1:24 to play.

With the win, Texas Lutheran stayed a game behind ASC West leader McMurry in the division race. Texas Lutheran continues ASC play next week with road games at Sul Ross State (Thursday, 7:30 p.m.) and at Howard Payne (Saturday, 3 p.m.).
