The Tommies (9-4 overall, 9-0 MIAC) claimed their sixth victory in 13 days, and fifth on the road. UST extended its series winning streak over the Cardinals to 34 in a row. Also, 25-year head coach Steve Fritz coached his 650th game.
Neal Anderson added 12 points for the Toms, who outrebounded SMU 41-33. The Toms shot 52% in the first half and used a 21-5 run over the last 9:20 of the first half to take a 41-19 halftime lead.
The Toms maintained a 2.5-game lead over second-place Gustavus (6-2 MIAC) and a 3.5-game lead over third-place Carleton (5-3 MIAC).
UST finishes the first half of the 20-game conference schedule Monday at home vs. Concordia-Moorhead (4-4), a one-point hoem winner over Bethel (4-4) today. The Toms have a bye Wednesday night, host Carleton Jan. 22, then play three more road games to end January.
