Hamline 71, St. John's 62

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Four players scored in double figures for the Pipers as Hamline University defeated Saint John’s University 71-62 on Saturday, Jan. 15, at Sexton Arena on the SJU campus in Collegeville, Minn.

Hamline jumped out to a 7-2 lead and the score remained close for the most of the first half. Hamline took the lead for good at 22-21 with 5:27 remaining in the half. Hamline went on a 14-6 run to end the half to take a 34-27 lead. The second half saw Hamline open up a 16-point lead at 62-46 with 4:37 remaining. The closest SJU would come in the second half was six points at 49-43 with 10:47 left in the game.

Junior guard Jesse Hendricks had 19 points, while junior forward Charley Good added 15 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Kyle Foster had 13 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Sam Weiner contributed 12 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Hamline shot 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field and 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) from the free throw line.

Sophomore post Craig Schafer tied a career-high with 19 points for the Johnnies. Junior post Paul Henrichs had 15 points and six rebounds. Sophomore wing Nicholas Pariseau had 12 points. SJU’s second-leading scorer sophomore point guard Matt Ohme was held to two points, but did contribute seven assists. SJU shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field, but only 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from the three-point line. SJU had 18 turnovers, compared to 21 for the Pipers.

Hamline improves to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC, while SJU falls to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAC.
