The Indians (11-3 overall) won their eighth consecutive start in American Southwest Conference play and moved to 10-1 atop the West Division standings. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, dropped to 3-11, 3-8 and continued their futility at Kimbrell Arena, having not won on McMurry's home floor since Feb. 20, 1993 (81-72). Overall, McMurry is also 14-1 in the team's last 15 meetings.
The game was close for the first seven minutes as neither team held more than a six-point advantage. Cliff McGuire, who led all scorers with 25 points, hit a jumper to give HPU its only lead at 2-0. With 18 minutes and 31 seconds left in the half, Matt Autry made a lay-in and Tennison hit a free throw to put the Indians ahead for the rest of the afternoon.
But then Terence Mirabal's 3-pointer in the corner fueled a 7-0 run to make the score 21-8 at the 10:58, helping McMurry to a commanding 52-26 halftime lead. Mirabal ended up with 15 points.
The Yellow Jackets never mounted a serious threat in the second half and trailed by as many as 41 points with 8:30 remaining.
All 14 players scored for McMurry, including 60 points by the bench led by Spivey Conwill who had a career-high 10 in the closing minutes. The Indians outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 57-38 and shot 56.8 percent from the field.
Reserves Josh Weatherred and Nick Klein contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively, for the Yellow Jackets, who made 31 of 81 field goals for a 38.3 clip.
