With its win, B-W is now 12-3 overall and 5-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Marietta fell to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.
In a very fast paced first half, there were 11 lead changes and seven ties. The Yellow Jackets had 17 turnovers in the first half, as the Pioneers jumped out to a seven point lead at the 13:04 mark, when senior guard Chris Fulton scored on a layup to make the score, 18-11. The Yellow Jackets would bounce back outscoring the Pioneers 17-7, to close the half making the score 49-44.
In the second half, B-W never trailed and led by as many 30 at the 7:46 mark when freshman guard Tyler Sekerak scored on a layup. Marietta made a late run, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 35-16 in the final seven minutes, but could not overcome the large Yellow Jacket lead en route to the 107-96 loss. Marietta got as close as 11 points at the end of the game with 1.6 seconds remaining, when freshman guard Seth Amburgey scored on a layup.
For the game, B-W shot extremely well from the floor as they went 42 of 64 for the game for 65.6 percent and even better in the second half as they only missed 11 shots going 24 of 35 for 68.6 percent. B-W outrebounded Marietta 67-46 for the game. Marietta set two OAC records today, the first for three-pointers attempted, in which they shot 63 attempts and a team record for steals in a game as they had 21. They also tied the OAC record for three-pointers in a game with 19, previously done by Wilmington, coincidentally set in a game last year against B-W. B-W set a new school record for turnovers in game, as they handed the ball over 37 times. The Yellow Jackets came close to a school record for assists in a game, but fell three shy of 1980-81 record of 29.
Thad Davis was joined in double figueres by his brother who collected a double-double with 21 points 12 rebounds. Junior and All-OAC guard Kieth Aufmuth had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Brendan Schuler set a career-high with 11 points.
With his 34 points and 15 rebounds today, Thad Davis now has 1,656 career points and 846 career rebounds. He is now fifth all-time in scoring as he surpassed Shelley Watters (1979-1982) who scored 1,627 career points and Ted Johnson (1965-1969) who scored 1,652 career points. He also surpassed Johnson in rebounding and now stands alone in fourth place as Johnson had 836 career rebounds.
Marietta was led by Fulton who scored a team-high 25 points including seven three-pointers. Sophomore swingman Craig Stewart had 17 points and three three-pointers. Amburgey scored 11 points and senior forward Matt Hines had ten markers.
B-W will be back in action on Wednesday, January 19 when it travels to Tiffin, Ohio to play the Heidelberg College Student Princes at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
