Gordon 70, University of New England 66

WENHAM, Mass. — The Gordon College Fighting Scots shot 58.3 percent (14 of 24) in the second half to overcome a 19-point deficit on their way to a 70-66 Commonwealth Coast Conference win over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Center.

Trailing 40-21 at the break, the Fighting Scots heated up from long range in the final frame, making 7 of 13 attempts (53.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

Despite Gordon's torrid shooting, UNE was able to hold off the Fighting Scots until first-year forward Jon Marstaller made a pair of free throws with 2:03 left to give Gordon a 65-64 advantage. The two freebies capped a stretch during which Marstaller scored seven straight points for his team.

UNE came up empty on its next two possessions before Jerry Logan nailed a 3-pointer with 28 seconds to play, giving the Fighting Scots a four-point (68-64) cushion.

Gordon forward Mike Herr sank four 3-pointers en route to a team-high 23 points. Marstaller finished with 17 points, while Aaron Vogelzang was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line on his way to 14 points.

The Fighting Scots (7-6, 3-2 CCC) were 22 of 30 from the free throw stripe, while the Nor'easters went to the line just 10 times, making nine.

Junior Matt McManus tallied a game-high 24 points for the Nor'easters. Sophomore Tom Button recorded his second double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and hauling down 15 rebounds. Junior Mark Oliver contributed 14 points, six rebounds and six assists.

UNE (4-7, 0-4) travels to Beverly, Mass. on Tuesday for a conference game versus Endicott College.
