Cornell 70, Central 61

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The inside combo of Scott Huisman and Clint Driftmier teamed to score 37 points, but a late flurry carried Cornell College past the Central College men’s basketball team Saturday, 70-61.

The game was tied, 56-56, with three minutes left, but Cornell got three unanswered buckets in the next two minutes for a 62-56 lead the Rams never relinquished. A three-point bucket by Brett De Hoogh made it 62-59 with 46 seconds remaining, but the Dutch could come no closer as Cornell hit all six of its free throw attempts in the final 26 seconds.

Cornell is now 4-10 overall and 1-4 in Iowa Conference play.

Central, 4-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference, got 19 points and eight rebounds from Huisman, while Driftmier had 18 points and five boards. The Dutch shot 58.8 percent from the floor in the 30-30 first half, but shot just 37.5 percent in the second half for 46.3 percent overall. Cornell shot 40.7 percent, but outrebounded the Dutch, 33-30.

Central returns home to face Loras College Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Kuyper Gym.
