Carthage 54, North Central (Ill.) 51

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (9-6, 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) shocked CCIW-opponent and No. 21 North Central College (13-2, 3-1 CCIW), 54-51, on Saturday, January 15 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The two teams met last Saturday, January 8, with the then-No. 27 Cardinals winning a 71-55 game at Gregory Arena in Naperville, Ill. North Central defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 82-62, on Wednesday, January 12. The last time Carthage won a game with less than 60 points was a 57-47 decision over North Park University on Jan. 19, 2000. The Redmen jumped out to a 20-point lead in the first half, 34-14, at 4:56 and led by 17 at the break, 34-17. The second half was a different game, however, as the Redmen went cold from the floor, shooting just 23 percent (5-22) in the second period. The Cardinals, shooting 58 percent (11-19) in the period, whittled the lead down and finally took their first lead of the game, 46-45, at 6:03. That was also their last lead, as Carthage re-gained the edge, 47-46, at 4:46 on a jumper by Navarro Thompson. Thompson connected on another basket at 1:19, as well as a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds on the clock to ice the win. Trailing, 52-51, North Central had a chance to win the game with 1.6 seconds on an inbound play under their own basket, but the Cardinals were whistled for a shot clock violation. With the Redmen taking over possession with 0.6 seconds, the Cardinals’ Ray Vicario fouled Thompson in the backcourt, and Thompson converted the final two free throws for the 54-51 margin. Carthage shot just 37 percent for the game (20-54), while North Central shot 45 percent (18-40). Brian Schlemm was the lone Carthage player in double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds. Anthony Simmons topped the Cardinals with 12 points and six boards. On Wednesday, January 19 (7:30 p.m.), the Redmen play host to CCIW-opponent Millikin University at the Carthage PEC in a re-match of the Wednesday, January 12 game in Decatur, Ill.
