The Knights (7-6, 5-3 MIAC) beat the Oles in the 175th meeting between the two Northfield colleges. It allowed the Knights to retain the Goat Trophy, as the Oles needed a season-series sweep to wrest control of the traveling trophy away from Carleton. Carleton has now held the 91 year-old trophy for 15 of the last 16 years and moved to 14-5 against the Oles over the last 19 meetings.
Tucker Weisman paced St. Olaf (6-8, 2-7 MIAC) with 22 points, including a 6-for-10 performance from three-point range. The Oles lost for the fifth consecutive time and the seventh out of their last nine outings after starting the season 4-1.
Anthony Baquero added 17 points, including five triples, and Dan Forkrud tallied his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while adding four steals and three blocked shots. Tommy Drake and Jake Phillips added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Carleton. Drake grabbed nine rebounds and Phillips matched his career high with seven assists.
Carleton shot at an even 50-percent clip in both halves and held the Oles to 32.3 percent shooting. The Knights knocked down 11 three-pointers, tying their conference season high. The Oles led at 2-0 and 4-3 before the hosts ripped off an 18-4 spurt, with Forkrud kicking off the spree with a three-pointer and put-back and Phillips and Baquero capping it with consecutive three-pointers, followed by a Beste lay-up.
The Knights lead grew to as many as 28 points midway through the second half, but the Oles made 7-of-11 three-pointers over the final 20 minutes, including a trio of Weisman barrages over a four-minute spurt in the final stages of the half.
Carleton returns to action on Monday, Jan. 17, hosting St. Mary’s at 7:30 p.m. The Oles also play the Cardinals next, traveling to Winona on Wednesday, Jan. 19 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
