Oglethorpe 54, Centre 44

DANVILLE, KY — Men's basketball falls to Oglethorpe 54-44

The Centre College men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped, falling to Oglethorpe University 54-44, Friday, Jan. 14, in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game, in Atlanta, Ga.

Oglethorpe improves to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC, while Centre drops its first conference game to fall to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Stormy Petrels' Russ Churchwell posted game-highs in both points with 16, and rebounds with 18. Eric Dickenson added 15 points and nine rebounds in the win.

Junior center Reggie Magnusson led the Colonels with 12 points and freshman guard Matt Nestheide scored 11 points. Junior forward Coy Zerhusen notched eight points and pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds.

With the Colonels up 12-9 midway through the first half, Alex Waterson nailed two three-point shots to put Oglethorpe up 15-12. The Stormy Petrals would add to the lead and take a 22-15 lead into the intermission.

The two teams combined to make only 13 of its 52 (25.0%) first half shots including only four of 28 (14.3%) from beyond the three point arc.

With Oglethorpe leading 33-24 with 15:34 left in the second half, Nestheide and freshman guard Thomas Britt each knocked down three-pointers to bring the Colonels to within three points at 33-30.

That would be the closest Centre would get as the Stormy Petrals responded by going on a 12-2 run to extend the lead to 45-32 with just over eight minutes remaining.

Centre finished the game shooting only 27.8% (15-54) from the field and only six of 29 (20.7%) from the three-point line. Oglethorpe shot 38.5% (20-52) from the floor and only five of 22 (22.7%) from beyond the three-point arc.

Centre will next travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Millsaps College, Sunday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is set for noon CST.
