SUNY-Maritime 70, Briarcliffe 52

Throggs Neck, NY — The Privateers of Maritime College entered into tonight’s game with only one win and just suffered a close defeat to Baruch earlier in the week. The young Briarcliffe squad consisted of all freshmen and it showed out on the court as the more experienced Maritime squad took it to the Seahawks hard and picked up their second win of the year. Junior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, AL/G. W. Carver), who is now wearing a protective mask similar to that of the NBA's Lebron James to protect his nose from further injury, led the team for the third straight game with 20 points and grabbed five boards.

Briarcliffe broke out an early 8-0 run in the beginning moments of this game and appeared to be on fire, but Maritime quickly answered back with its own 8-0 run with Benton picking up six of those points as he dominated the paint. At around 14:16 left in the half, the Privateers took their first lead of the game, a lead that they would never relinquish.

For well over six minutes in the first half, Maritime was able to hold Briarcliffe to only 12 points, yet they kept pacing up and down the floor nailing each jump shot and lay-up totaling for a 39-18 margin after one half of play. The Privateers got a huge effort out of senior guard Gary Browne (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) who had his best game of the year scoring 18 points making 4-of-6 shots from downtown. The Seahawks actually outscored the Privateers in the second half although Coach Spina did empty the bench for a majority of the half.

Freshman forward Brandon Feliciano (Long Island, NY) was the high scorer for the Seahawks with 23 points and six rebounds, while the six-foot-five center Michael Manusama (Merrick, NY) pulled down 13 boards but was limited to only five points thanks to the stellar defensive efforts by both Benton and junior forward Jonathan Holler (N. Tonawanda, NY/Cardinal O’Hara).

The win now brings Maritime to 2-9 on the year and remains at 1-2 in the Skyline Conference. They will get a shot to break even in the conference on Saturday when they travel to the deep end of Long Island to take on the Golden Eagles of Saint Joseph’s in an 8pm second half of a men’s/women’s double header.
