Salve Regina 73, Nichols 65

Dudley, MA — Salve Regina (8-4, 5-0 conference) went on a 16-4 run to start the second half and never looked back as the Seahawks defeated Nichols College, 73-65, tonight in Dudley, MA on the campus of Nichols College.

Salve’s guard Matt Coute had 24 points, while Matt Grendal added 16 in the win. Nichols College (2-7, 0-4 conference) was led by Jermaine Baskerville with 14 points, Anthony Smith with 13 and Casey Butler with eight points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Coute sparked the Seahawks offense in the first half as he was the only player in double figures with 11 points. He continued his assault in the second half as he had eight points in the Salve Regina offensive run to start the half. The Seahawks defense caused Nichols to cough up the ball four times and miss four long jumpers in the run.

By the time Nichols recovered it was too late as Salve Regina continued to control the pace of the game. Baskerville hit a 3-pointer for Nichols with just under a minute to play to cut the lead, 69-65, but hot foul shooting by Salve sealed the win. The Seahawks went 4-for-4 in the final minute of play.
