Colby-Sawyer 71, Gordon 68

NEW LONDON, N.H. — Colby-Sawyer moved to 4-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 71-68 win over Gordon on Thursday night at the David L. Coffin Field House. The Chargers led by as many as eight points with nearly four minutes remaining and withstood a Gordon rally to hold on for the victory.

The Chargers (9-3, 4-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference) went up by eight on Chris Condon's two free throws with 3:53 to play, then held on as the Fighting Scots cut it to five when Jon Marstaller was fouled making a lay-up. After a Colby-Sawyer miss on the other end, Mike Herr made one of two shots with 2:18 left to cut the lead to four and forced a turnover by Colby-Sawyer. Justin Kaufman's three-pointer with a minute and a half left fell hit the rim before going over the backboard, giving the ball back to the Chargers.

Tyler Fournier then made a pair of free throws, putting the Chargers back up by six with 1:17 left. Herr then drained a three-pointer with 59.6 seconds left, again cutting the deficit to three.

The Chargers had two chances to put the game out of reach, first getting an offensive rebound with 26 seconds left on Josh Carter's short jumper, then when Condon missed a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining. Gordon (6-6, 1-3 CCC) then raced the ball down the floor, where Scott Allenby's three came up short but went out of bounds off a Charger defender. That set up Jerry Logan's heave from three-quarter quart that caromed off the backboard and ending the game.

Condon led the Chargers with 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Andrew St. Clair added 11 points and 12 boards. James Thorpe chipped in with nine points for Colby-Sawyer. For Gordon, Herr led the way with 18 points, followed by Marstaller and Logan's 16 apiece. Aaron Vogelzang also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Colby-Sawyer closes out its four-game home stand on Tuesday, January 18, when it hosts Anna Maria in a 7:30 game in New London.
