Wooster, which was awarded top billing on Monday from the only NCAA Div. III weekly basketball poll for the first time this season and the second time in school history, never trailed on Wednesday, while extending its best start to a season to 14-0 and improving to 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Kenyon (2-12, 1-4 NCAC) tied it three times within the first three minutes, but moments later, the Scots turned a 10-9 game into a rout with a 21-3 explosion, fueled by three 3-pointers from Kyle Witucky.
Wooster maintained its hot shooting and up-tempo style for the second part of the first half as well, steadily pulling out to a 53-26 advantage by the break. The Scots finished the first 20 minutes with a 61.8 field-goal percentage (21-for-34), highlighted by 9-of-15 shooting from 3-point range.
In the second half, Wooster quickly pushed the lead to over 30 points (59-28) and slowly increased it to 40 (85-45), eventually securing the 43-point margin.
The Scots placed five in double figures, highlighted by a season-high 14 points from freshman guard Devin Fulk, who hit 5-of-6 from the floor, including 2-of-3 3-pointers. Leading scorer, Tom Port, matched Fulk’s output with all 14 of his points coming in the first half on 4 3-pointers (out of seven attempts) and an alley-oop dunk from Witucky.
Witucky tallied 11 markers in the scorebook, while Matt Schlingman and Andy Van Horn contributed 10 apiece.
Andrew Good and Tyler Rehm were Kenyon’s scoring leaders, each with 10 points.
Wooster, which ended up connecting on 57.6 percent of its field goals (34-for-59), produced a 43-30 rebounding advantage, with a team-high seven coming from both reserve forwards – Justin Bradley and Tim Vandervaart.
Next, the Scots will host rival Wittenberg University (12-2, 4-1 NCAC) in a key conference tilt on Saturday night. Opening tip at Timken Gym is slated for 7:30 p.m.
