The St. Olaf men's basketball team lost their fourth straight conference game 70-67 after falling short on a late-game comeback against Gustavus Wednesday night at Skoglund Center.
Mark Bergstrom (So., Woodbury, Minn.) hit a layup with 4.9 seconds to play, cutting the deficit to 69-67. After a foul and one made free-throw by Gustavus St. Olaf had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Jon Butala (So., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) missed the jumper giving the Gusties the win.
Butala scored nine of St. Olaf's first 11 points on their 11-2 run to open the game, helping them to a 27-25 halftime lead, he ended up with 15 points and six rebounds.
Tucker Weisman finished with a career high 14 points.
Doug Esponson of Gustavus dropped 16 second half points and was 5-of-5 from the line leading the Gusties to victory, he finished with 18.
St. Olaf once again out-rebounded their opponent beating Gustavus 29-26 on the boards, Jon Bain led the way with 10.
St. Olaf drops to 2-6 in the MIAC with the loss while Gustavus improved their conference record to 5-2.
The Oles play next at Carleton College Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
