Randolph-Macon 67, Hampden-Sydney 48

ASHLAND, Va. — Junior forward Justin Wansley scored a game-high 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team to a 67-48 victory over visiting Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday, January 12. Wansley, who had six of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court, made 5-of-7 (71.4%) foul shots. Also for the Yellow Jackets, junior guard Patrick Gill totaled 11 points and six assists.

The win makes the Yellow Jackets 8-6 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC. The Tigers drop to 6-7 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

Hampden-Sydney’s only lead was at 2-0 on an early layup by sophomore center Davis Bowne, assisted by junior center Aaron Lewek. Randolph-Macon senior guard Justin Moyer made a layup to knot the score at 2-2. A three-pointer by Wansley, off an assist by Gill, made the score 5-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, and they would not trail again. In the first half, the biggest lead for the hosts was 19 points, at 23-4 midway through the period. The margin at halftime was 15 points, 32-17.

The second half was more of the same, as Randolph-Macon continued to dominate. The advantage grew to as many as 24 points several times in the first 12 minutes. The closest the Tigers would get was to within 16 points, 63-47, with a little over two minutes remaining.

Following the performances by Wansley and Gill, three other Randolph-Macon players scored in double figures, each with 10 points: Moyer, sophomore forward Philip Hawley, and freshman center Andrew Baker. Moyer, who made 2-of-3 (66.7%) three-pointers, also handed out six assists. Hawley grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds – seven of those defensive. Baker shot 4-for-5 (80.0%) from the floor and had six rebounds.

Hampden-Sydney was led by sophomore guard Mike Edwards, with 10 points. Freshman forward Mladen Cvijanovic added eight points, including 6-of-8 (75.0%) free throws. Freshman forward Troy Kaase and Lewek each had six points and six rebounds. Kaase made 3-of-4 (75.0%) field goals.
