Fontbonne held the lead only once the entire game and kept the margin within single digits until about 7:34 in the first half when the Saints went on a 9-0 run in less than one minute to take an 18-point lead. Maryville would lead by as many as 19 points in the final six minutes of the half and took a 41-26 lead into halftime.
Maryville came out sluggish at the start of the second half, as the Griffins cut their lead to 10 points with 16:08 left to play. The Saints would quickly turn that around, going on a 12-2 run over a three minute time span to increase their lead to 20. Maryville took that lead and ran away with the game, as they sank nine layups and in the final seven minutes.
Junior Ben Hebl would lead the Saints with a team-high 22 points, nine rebounds and four steals. He shot 7-14 (.500) from the floor and was 6-7 (.857) from the line on the night. Sophomore Jason Rezabek added a season-high 20 points on 8-10 (.800) shooting. He also added seven rebounds and three blocks in the win. Junior Matt Regan would also score in double figures, as he recorded a season-high 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and tallied three steals.
Maryville's backcourt of senior Andrew Hulbert and junior Tim Elwell dished out four and six assists respectively. Junior Ryan Klein also chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds in the Saints winning effort.
Fontbonne relied on three of their starters for a majority of their offensive production. Kennard Davis scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Antonio Holland recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. David Carreno also chipped in with 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and seven steals.
As a team, the Saints finished 38-81 (.469) from the field and outrebounded Fontbonne 62-37. The Griffins were 25-76 (.329) from the field for the game, and connected on only half of their free throws, as they finished 13-26 (.500) from the charity stripe.
Maryville will be back in action on Saturday, January 15, when they travel to Fulton, MO, to take on the Bluejays of Westminster College in their first conference road game of the season. Tip-off is 3:00 pm.
