The first half wasn’t one of the Spartans’ better halves. The green and white started off playing well as they led 20-12 midway through the first half. Unfortunately for York, the Spartans would get just a Kenny Fass trey over the next five minutes as Marymount blitzed the Spartans with a 20-3 run. That turned an eight point Spartan lead into a nine-point Marymount bulge. The Saints built the lead to 11 at the half as York trailed at the half for just the third time this year.
The green and white regrouped at the half and began the half with a 13-2 run to cut their deficit to 45-43 with a little less than 14 minutes left in the game. Six minutes later, Brad Zerfing hit a a big three that gave the Spartans a 53-51 lead. That trey was the start of a 17-1 run that gave the Spartans a 63-52 lead with 4:55 remaining in regulation as Zerfing capped the run with a jumper. Zerfing and Paddy Lee keyed the run as Zerfing had seven points and Lee chipped in with five markers of his own. The Spartan lead did not fall below seven the rest of the way. York converted seven of eight from the free throw line over the last 2:33 to seal the victory.
The Spartans received 23 points from junior Brandon Bushey as he was 9-for-13 from the floor including 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Zerfing added 13 points and five assists while Lee and Fass each tallied 11 points. Lee also had two rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Fass pulled down four rebounds and had two assists to aid the Spartan attack. Freshman Chad McGowan and senior Ben Seibert both played well in the interior. McGowan had eight points and a career-high eight rebounds while Seibert added eight points and seven rebounds.
Evan Martin led all scorers with 24 points for the Saints. Martin added six rebounds and three assists. Kip McCoy notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Brandon Parker was the third Saint in double figures with 12 points.
For just the second time this year, the Spartans were outrebounded as the Saints held a 42-30 edge on the boards. The Spartans shot 47.6% from the floor for the game but they ripped the net to the tune of 59.4% in the second half as YCP tallied 51 second half points. York also converted a blistering 52.6% from beyond the arc, nailing 10 of their 19 attempts from downtown.
York goes for their third CAC victory on Saturday when they travel to St. Mary’s for a league tilt. Game time in St. Mary’s City is set for 4:00 pm.
