Stevens 80, Kings Point 75

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior team captain Josh Buck's 22 points were not enough Wednesday night at Liebertz Gymnasium, as the Mariners' men's basketball team fell to Skyline Conference foe Stevens, 80-75.

The visiting Ducks (5-7, 2-1 Skyline),who snapped a three-game losing streak, shot 7-for-14 in the second half from 3-point range, and 47.6 percent from beyond the arc overall. Stevens gained an upper hand in the contest by forcing 25 USMMA (6-6, 1-1 Skyline) turnovers, which led to 33 points.

USMMA trailed just 31-30 at halftime, and took advantage of a 13-for-17 performance at the free throw line in the stanza. The lead changed hands three times in the frame, and was tied five times. A 9-0 run by Stevens put them up 26-20 with six minutes to go.

The Ducks never trailed again in on the night, though Kings Point forced two ties in the second half - the latest one coming on a 3-point play Zach Wyatte to knot the game, 41-41, with 15:17 to go. The Ducks got the lead up to as high as 10 points with 7:06 to go, before the Mariners fought valiantly to pull within 71-69 on a pair of Buck's free throws with 2:09 showing on the clock.

Isaac Moore buried a trifecta in the ensuing Stevens offensive possession, before the Mariners had the ball down 78-75 with less than 15 seconds left with a chance to tie the game. However, Jimmy Sanders' 3-pointer with eight ticks remaining hit the front rim, and the Ducks hit a fastbreak lay-in to ice it.

Waleed Farid had 19 points (4-for-10 3FG) for the Ducks, while Moore added 17 and a game-high-tying five assists.

Buck had a game-high with nine rebounds, while Wyatte (15 pts., 6 reb.), Joe Hart (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Brian Kelly (11 pts.) also scored in double figures for Kings Point.

Head coach Chris Carideo's Mariners are back in Skyline action Monday night (Jan. 17), when the Mariners travel across the Throgs Neck Bridge to face Maritime College in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
