St. Mary's (2-10, 1-6 in the MIAC) shot 38 of 49 from the free throw line including 32 of 38 in the second half to come away with the win. There were five technical fouls in the game, including four in the second half.
Hamline (4-8, 2-5) fell behind 17-3 in the first 7:07 of the game and never recovered. Dan Kloak scored five of his 13 points in the run. The Pipers shot just 21 percent in the first half as the Cardinals led 35-18 at the break.
In the second half, the Pipers' shooting heated up as sophomore point guard Sam Wiener scored 14 of his team-high 17 points in the half. Hamline shot 44 percent in the second half and cut the lead to 71-62 with 3:13 left, but the Cardinals knocked down 12 of 12 free throws down the stretch for the win.
After Wiener's 17 points, Jesse Hendricks, Greg Koba, and Adam Hakanson all scored 11 points for the Pipers. Koba also added eight rebounds.
St. Mary's put five players in the double figures. Brensley Haywood and Eric Lear each tallied 15 points. Kloak added 13 while Jeff Tendall and Michael Batterman each scored 10 points.
