Averett 91, Ferrum 71

DANVILLE, Va. — To say that the Averett University men’s basketball team shot the ball well on Wednesday would be a great understatement. Averett fired in 38-of-61 shots for a red-hot 62 percent shooting and defeated Ferrum College by a 91-71 final. It was the USA South Conference opener for both teams.

The Cougars (4-6, 1-0 USA South) placed six players in double figures, led by Cameron Brown’s 18 points off of the bench. He scored on 8-of-12 attempts, while also adding five assists and four rebounds. Sterling Williams and Lymon Gregory each added 15 points and Billy Gardner tallied 13. Gardner was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor.

The Panthers (3-9, 0-1 USA South) had a not-so-shabby shooting night as well. In fact they netted 65 percent of their shots in the opening period. Ferrum took a 49-43 lead into the intermission, but Averett stepped up the defense in the second half and held Ferrum to 31 percent shooting in the final period.

After trailing by as many as five midway through the second half, Ferrum’s Rob Fuller netted a layup with 9:45 remaining to trim an Averett lead to 67-66. However, the Cougars ended the game on a 24-5 spurt for the 91-71 final margin. Averett scored 52 points in the paint, aiding their blistering field goal percentage.

Averett’s Jeremy Haskins, who battled early foul trouble, scored 12 points and dished four assists. Andrew Boor added 10 points and eight boards in the winning effort for the Cougars.

Ferrum was led by Ed Robinson's game-high 21 points. Kenny Johnson contributed an additional 17.

Averett improves to 4-0 at home this season. They return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Greensboro College. The Cougars return home on Tuesday against Methodist in the Hoops for Hope contest to benefit those affected by the recent tsunami disasters. The Averett women’s team opens the night at 5:30 p.m. against the Monarchs, with the men following in the nightcap.
