Worcester State 73, Fitchburg State 65

WORCESTER, Ma — The Worcester State College men’s basketball team opened their MASCAC schedule by defeating the visiting Falcons of Fitchburg State by the final score of, 73-65, Tuesday evening in Lancer Gymnasium on the campus of Worcester State College. The win improves the Lancers to 6-4, while Fitchburg State falls to 2-10.

The Lancers and Falcons battled to a, 30-30, halftime score as Worcester State junior Ryan Hopkins (Oxford, MA) went for 15 first half points on 5 or 6 shooting including 3 for 4 from behind the three point line. Fitchburg State got 8 points from both Rashad Cope (Roxbury, MA) and Dan Largesse (Sutton, MA).

Fitchburg State took a six point lead early in the second half before Worcester State battled back to take the lead with 14:29 remaining in the game. Worcester State’s Hopkins added 10 second half points in the second half to lead the Lancers to the 73-65 victory.

Worcester State finished with three players in double digits. Along with Hopkins’ 25, senior Jermaine Cannon (Dorchester, MA) totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds. So-captain Tom Sullivan (Auburn, MA) also chipped in with 10 points. Fitchburg was led by Largesse who finished with 12 points and Nick Smith (Fitchburg, MA) who had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Adam DiZuzio (Gardner, MA) also added 10 points for the Falcons.

Worcester State will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Eastern Nazarene. Fitchburg next takes to the court on Saturday when they host Salem State.
